Title Patent Right Registration Procedure Facing Drastic Reform

Starting from next January … Reduced Processing Time for 7 Days

Starting from this July, the registration procedures for obtaining a patent went through a drastic reform.

The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) announced that they will carry out a reform plan that focuses on the simplification of the transfer procedures by introducing the Reapplication System and the Giro Payment System for managing registration set-up fee.

With the introduction of such reforms, the processing time for a patent registration was reduced by at least seven days.
This became possible with the introduction of the ‘Reapplication System’, which allowed the applicants to skip the cumbersome application return procedure.
Instead, now the applicant can proceed directly onto editing the erroneous information contained in the original application before making a submission for another chance for patent registration.
In addition, the Giro Payment System for patent registration fee will also be introduced on a national scale, allowing people to make license (registration) fee payments at any place within the country.
In order to make these changes possible, the Korean Intellectual Property Office planned to forward the statement of payment for license (registration) fee when notifying the person concerned with the registration set-up decision.

Along with the above changes, the procedure for indicating a change of address was removed even in the situation where the address of registration obligator and original registrant are different on the patent transfer application form.
This convenient service is to be granted only in the case where change of address can be verified.

KIPO announced that “our new reforms on the current registration process are expected to provide extra convenience to civilians who are involved with registration of intellectual properties”.
